Life-Size Self Portraits as Monsters

The morning had an unexpected start and changes had to be made from the original lesson plan. Although the spirits of the teachers were wounded, our students couldn't have been more excited to see us. We were even successful at getting our math students to create hidden numbers within their drawings, and they made it into a game! After sketchbook time, I had all the students gather around me on the floor, and went over the classroom rules again. It was a great 2-way conversation between the teachers and students, and the students knew exactly why we were going over the rules again and could tell me why we were so disappointed last week. After the discussion, the students were well behaved and only had to be told once or twice to use their inside voices.

Their project this week was to create a life size self portrait as a monster. We talked about the alter egos of Wolf Man and Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hide and how they have an "inner monster". We talked extensively about their ideas and told them that they could work in a small group. Only two of our students wanted to work together but they had a blast working together, giggling, and talking about their monster to each other. Our students took this project in directions that I didn't think of, but was very pleased with the results. As I was walking around the room taking pictures, and listening to the students talk as they were working; I found myself smiling hearing the students interacting and how they were sharing the supplies (which is a rule). Although that morning didn't start off well, with the help of our students we were very pleased with how the day and lesson went.

This week we are working on monster comic books, which students were introduced to at the end of the lesson, and were to start mapping out their drawings/stories in their sketchbook.
